11 Second Club June Entry

***UPDATE*** Thank you to all of the members at the 11 Second Club for voting and commenting on this piece of animation. I take all of the feedback seriously, so the time taken to rate and then write something means a lot.

After a busy first part of June, I put everthing else aside and deticated the last two weeks of June to the 11 Second Club. After hearing the track it only took a couple minutes before I starting doodling a clown in the entrance of a fancy restaurant. I sat on the idea for a couple days and then began work on the animation. below are a bunch of sketches that included designs for the clown and thumbnails for the animation. Enjoy!

Congratulations on the 11 second challenge! I couldn't wait to find out who animated the clown sequence. I've been stop framing that sucker for days!

So, the character moves so freely, I find it sort of restricting animating on the paper, how do you approach the animation? I see the planning stages but in terms of timing, I just cnt wrap my mind around how you did it, I mean I know how the process goes, but its just so smooth and natural...I cant put words together to articulate what Im trying to ask...it just looks like it was easy for you to do...damn it..

hey matt,

well. for the clown stuff, i did all the thumbnails that i posted and all of the sketches i posted, then i started animating on fours mostly. i tested it and showed a couple of people that i really trusted, got feedback, made a few changes to the keys. i cleaned the keys and then went into inbetweening, being very carful about my arcs and my spacing. so i was at first very scribbley until i got what i wanted, then i got tighter and cleaner and it seems like it's the spacing and arcs that make or break how natural something looks, i dunno. all i know is that i try to pay very close attention to that sort of thing!!

I'm so glad you won!! Your animation and concept for his was amazing. I kept watching it over and over :D.

The panda animation you did is so great too!! I love the jumps, the weight in the whole piece is so nice! You mentioned that you used watercolor to color it O.o. Did you transfer your drawings onto watercolor paper then. That sounds insane if you did!
Can't wait to see the whole thing finished! It's going to be beautiful :D

very, very well animated! my problem is the voice, somehow I don't connect it to a clown character. but this is minor - great job!

Your animation and drawings are awesome. The detail in the facial animation and your handling of volume were really well down.

Congratulations BJ! Jimmy Stewart seems the perfect choice to play the part of a clown :) Your choice of characters and situation naturally went together for a great short piece.

Hi BJ
I really inspired by your animation. I'm a self-taught animator and really want to get my animation to high standards. I have question for you, if you don't mind me asking. On the timing chart, what does the lines from key to breakdown to key means? If this makes any sense! Here is an example of what I'm talking about: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7396/1774/1600/horizontal_chart.jpg

Thank you so much for sharing with me. Much appreciate it.
Kind regards
Russell
